Focal Laser Photocoagulation
Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange

This outpatient procedure is designed to seal leaking capillaries beneath the retina. It is used for leaks that occur outside the macula (the center of the visual field).

1. Preparation
The eye may be numbed, and a special contact lens is placed over the cornea to help direct the laser light.

2. Laser Treatment
The laser is aimed at the leakage. The laser heats the tissue, causing the blood to coagulate. The surrounding tissue is untouched.

End of Procedure and After Care
Vision may be blurry following the procedure, but should stabilize within 24 hours. Follow-up visits are needed so that the physician can determine the success of the procedure. Most patients need multiple treatments to control the leakage.
